Advice on Using a Chiminea
How to use a chimenea:
Before you start using your chimenea, it is essential that you first make sure that the chimenea stands up straight and free, to prevent the danger of it falling over when lit and causing an accident. Care must be taken to place your chimenea on a firm level surface. We advise that you put sand or pebbles on the bottom of the chimenea to give it extra stability and security. This also acts to insulate the bowl of the chimenea so the fire is not directly against the clay. When starting a fire, first slowly burn some newspapers inside the ‘bowl’ until the chimenea is dry.For barbeque chimineas: put the coals on the bottom grill so the fire below can light them. When the coals are hot and the fire below has diminished, you can start to grill on the top grill. If flames begin to come out of the neck then your fire is getting too big.
When not using your chimenea it is important to always keep it dry. The easiest way to do this is by keeping a lid or the bag on to protect it. However do not bag a wet chimenea, during winter we advise you to keep it in a dry place inside your house, shed or garage. The combination of freezing temperatures and moisture could potentially cause your chimenea to crack.
There are also some dangers that you need to be aware of: · Never move a chimenea that is hot, once it is cooler remove the sand or pebbles first. · Watch children and pets when the chimenea is hot. · DO NOT use lighter fluids or other chemical products to light your chimenea as the clay can absorb the liquid. · For the same reason, never use water to put out the fire inside the chimenea.
